Details of the fraud

Cards are often stolen at ATMs and used immediately at other ATMs and for in-store purchases until the account is empty or the card is stopped. This can happen through mugging, pickpocketing or car break-ins. Criminals also use shoulder surfing, which is a type of visual hacking where someone watches over your shoulder - either directly or with cameras - to steal sensitive information, like:

  • Passwords or PINs
  • Credit card numbers
  • Personal details on screens.

What you can do

  • Don't accept help at the ATM.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid using ATMs if suspicious people are nearby.
  • Cover the keypad when entering you PIN.
  • Report lost and stolen cards immediately.
