How to stay on top of car care this winter

Cold weather can put extra strain on your vehicle. From brakes to battery health, staying on top of winter car care helps you drive safer and avoid costly repairs. Here's how to keep your car in peak condition when it's chilly.

Winter in south africa may not bring blizzards, but colder temperatures and wet roads can still affect your car - and your safety. Whether you're commuting in early morning frost or driving through freezing rain, it's important to prepare your vehicle for the season. Here are a few practical checks and maintenance tips to help keep your car running smoothly and safely.

Top winter car care tips

Check the brakes

Depending on where you are in the country, winter can bring wet or icy roads. Your brakes need to be in top shape. Check that your car's brake pads aren't worn and that your brake fluid is topped up. If your brakes need replacing, don't wait - get it done.

Check your tyres

Tyres are key to staying safe on the road in winter. Make sure they're in good condition, and remember to check your spare tyre. If your tyres are worn, your vehicle may lose traction and skid when the road is wet.

  • Check tread depth: A new tyre has 8 mm to 9 mm of tread depth. Once it wears down to the top of the wear bars (small raised bumps in the grooves), you know it's time to replace them.
  • Tyre pressure: Check your tyre pressure regularly. You can go to a petrol station for this. For the correct pressure, refer to your car manual or the label inside the door or fuel cap.

Check fluid levels

Along with brake fluid, make sure that other engine fluids are at the right levels. Check your:

  • Coolant: A 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze to prevent freezing and overheating.
  • Windscreen washer fluid: Use a formula that won't freeze on bitterly cold mornings.
  • Oil: Always regularly check your oil level and top up if needed.

Get a service

Winter is also a good time to get your car serviced, because cold weather can make existing car issues worse. For example, a battery test is recommended as older batteries often struggle in cold weather and may need replacing. With Vitality Drive, you can save up to 20% when you take your insured vehicle to your nearest Bosch servicing centre for servicing or maintenance.

Simply book an appointment online using your ID or passport number, vehicle registration, or Vitality Drive card. At your appointment, let the agent know that you are a Vitality Drive client and show your Vitality Drive card or ID to make sure that you get your discount.

If you've added the Discovery Insure Vehicle Warranty to your comprehensive Discovery Insure plan, you can get up to 50% off based on your Vitality Drive status. Plus, you can double your discount to up to 100% if you service your car at any Bosch dealership.

Taking a few simple steps can help you avoid breakdowns and drive confidently all winter long. From checking your brakes and tyres to booking a discounted service, Discovery Insure and Vitality Drive make it easier - and more rewarding - to give your car the care it needs.
