Beware of SAPS impersonators

Fraudsters are posing as South African Police Services (SAPS) officers to scam people.

Fraudsters are posing as South African Police Services (SAPS) officers to scam people.

Beware of a scam where someone calls pretending to be a SAPS officer. They'll give you a fake badge number and claim that illegal activities are linked to your ID number. Then, they'll transfer you to "senior officer" who pressures you to send money to a fake SAPS account. The call usually comes from a private or untraceable number, and they often use threats to scare you into complying. Don't fall for it!

What you can do

  • Stay calm and verify their identity by calling the SAPS station they claim to be from.
  • Never transfer money or give banking details over the phone.
  • Call us immediately on 011 324 4444 if in doubt.

Note: SAPS will never demand money to drop a case or prevent an arrest.
